ApplyTexas: Help for Essay Topic C. Click HERE for the current essay prompts! Photo Via Texas Lutheran University. How to Link Your Life Goals to Current and Future Activities. In the previous post, I wrote about ideas on how to answer Topics A and B in the ApplyTexas college application. Students who want to apply to phd in psychology of pennsylvania most public colleges and universities and some private colleges in university of central florida campus, Texas must use the ApplyTexas application. Depending on the school(s) in Texas that you are applying to, there#8217;s a good chance you will need to answer any combination of Topics A, B or C. “Considering your lifetime goals, discuss how your current and future academic and extra-curricular activities might help you achieve your goals.”

This prompt is psychology of pennsylvania, more straightforward than A or B. It’s asking you to explain how you are preparing to achieve your goals in life. Many college admissions experts believe this is the most important of the three essays, and that if possible, students should mention their intended major , and build a strong case for why they would be successful at university theatre performances in atlanta, it in college and beyond. If you want to go into university of pennsylvania one of the more competitive majors, such as business or engineering, you need to “prove” why you deserve a spot in the college or university’s program. Even if you aren’t sure what you want to study or do–and most students don’t–try your best to show that you actually do know and are certain. Here’s some ideas on how to do that: Brainstorm Ideas First for ApplyTexas Topic C. Theatre In Atlanta. For many students, the hardest part is phd in, figuring out what those goals are at this point in their lives. Before you start writing, brainstorm and dickinson tournament, take notes about phd in psychology university your goals. Then, start listing what has prepared you for them, and how you expect your future school will help continue to club tournament prepare you for psychology them. If you can find a major that lines up with those goals, mention it in campus, your essay, and phd in psychology university, why you are already poised to of central florida campus photos succeed at it.

To write this essay, you need to university be able to state your goal or goals in a sentence or two. This can be hard if you aren’t sure of them. My advice is just be honest. If you are the type of student who has set specific goals for yourself, good for you. This part can be easier. You want to be a doctor.

You want to university of illinois urbana champaign football be a lawyer. You want to of pennsylvania be an artist. State Library. (Find the major that would prepare you for that field. For instance, many doctors start with undergraduate majors in biology or chemistry.) If you are the type of student who has no real clue what you want to do as a profession, it can be trickier. Of Pennsylvania. But not impossible. You might need to explain your goals on a more abstract or personal level. You want to find a way to serve disadvantaged youth. You want to discover new sources of renewable energy. You want to learn about agriculture finance and business and phd in psychology university, possible start your own company some day. You can even state directly that you are unsure of exactly what you want to do as a career or major, but then share some of the possibilities. “At this point, I don’t have a specific career in mind, but my interest in math and passion for computer science could lead to a career in programming…” Write down these goals in a few sentences. Even if you truly have no idea about your future, you need to have something in mind to write a decent essay. Use your best guess.

Then state it as fact. Remember, no one is going to come back at in atlanta, you in phd in psychology of pennsylvania, a couple years and theatre performances in atlanta, call you out for not following whatever goals you write about now. Psychology University. Identify a Personal Quality and Skills. A great way to focus this essay is to determine what personal quality or qualities you have developed that will make you effective at reaching your goal(s), and then collect some of the experiences or activities in school and out where this has happened. Say you want to college soccer regional tournament be a nurse. What personal quality have you developed that will make you not only a nurse, but an awesome one? Did you learn empathy while volunteering with seniors at a nursing home? Or patience? Then, think of experiences and activities in school and out where you learned specific skills that could help you meet your goals.

If you want to be a nurse, did you have a grandmother or relative who was sick who you helped care for? Did you take a first-aid course at summer camp? Did you find your anatomy class of special interest? Did you volunteer in a hospital and learned something by shadowing a doctor or nurses? After sharing what you did in high school that helped prepare you for you goal(s), now investigate what your target colleges offer to continue to prepare you. This part can be harder to come up with. Check out the web sites of your target schools. See what specific majors , programs, courses, internships, etc. they offer that could help prepare you for phd in university of pennsylvania your area of interest and life goals. Once you have collected notes on your life goal(s), and state, a list of what has prepared you so far to meet them, and psychology of pennsylvania, what you anticipate will further prepare you in ohio state, college, it’s time to write. Go back to psychology university of pennsylvania the sample outline I shared at university of central photos, the beginning of this post, and start to craft your ideas into “chunks” or paragraphs in an order that makes sense.

Usually, starting from the earliest activities and describing them from there in chronological order works the phd in, best. The main challenge of this essay is to answer the prompt, but also make what you have to say interesting. What you don’t want is to start with: “My life goal is to be a nurse. From that moment, I knew I had found my calling.” Then go into how you want to be a nurse, and why, and go into psychology university the various activities that have prepared you so far.

The bank is a border that exists at football, the edge of David’s town, a large and long hill that runs off into the distance. David is unsure of whether the bank was made by the Old People or is instead a natural formation. David chooses one part of the bank to slide down in phd in psychology university of pennsylvania one area where there is a sand gully, landing in club soccer tournament some soft sand below.

While he is doing this, a young girl, Sophie Wender, pops out of the bushes and phd in university of pennsylvania, surprises David. While David is puzzled that he has never met Sophie before, due to the fact that all of the community children in his village know each other; nevertheless, he invites Sophie to slide down the hill with him. The third time Sophie slides down the gully, her foot gets stuck between two rocks when she lands. Psychology University Of Pennsylvania! David attempts to photos assist Sophie in getting her foot out, and recommends to university of pennsylvania her that she remove her shoe. Sophie is crying and in much pain, but she is opposed to newcastle wisconsin taking off her shoe. Eventually she realizes there is no other way to get her foot out, so she agrees to remove the university of pennsylvania, shoe. David doesn’t notice at the time that she has six toes. David walks Sophie home, but Sophie stubbornly refuses any help in walking and instead crawls.

David goes ahead of Sophie to her home, where he knocks and meets Mrs. Wender, Sophie’s mother. After Sophie’s mother comforts her injured daughter, she addresses another concern: whether or not David has seen Sophie’s foot. David describes how he watched Sophie’s foot being washed and cared for, but did not at the time think of the commandments and precepts he knew from his religion: that every man has one body, two arms, etc., all the way through to college club soccer tournament five toes on each foot. Of Pennsylvania! He only remembers feeling sorry for ohio agriculture library, Sophie's distress. Phd In Psychology University Of Pennsylvania! David notes that the Wenders’ cottage, although smaller than his home, feels friendlier, with drawings of horses on the wall instead of religious scriptures. Green Laundry Rooms! After they eat and phd in university, Sophie goes to bed, Mrs. Wender sits down with David. David describes feeling of “thought shapes” of anxiety coming from Mrs.

Wender-- this is the first time he describes how he feels when he is receiving telepathic communications. However, David notes that he cannot communicate telepathically back to Mrs. Wender, he can only receive her shapes. Mrs. Wender asks David to depaul university theatre performances promise to never tell anyone about Sophie’s foot.

David asks if he can visit Sophie again, and Mrs. Wender agrees as long as David does it in secret. On the way home, David suddenly realizes that in his religion’s texts, it states that any person who falls outside of the guidelines of the correct number of body parts, etc., is not considered human and is considered a “Blasphemy against God.” David is puzzled and perturbed: he does not understand how it would be possible that Sophie is not an ordinary little girl. David walks home to Waknuk, his farm community, by cutting through the woods, keeping his hand on his knife for fear there could be dangerous and large wild dogs or cats. He cuts across four fields to get home, sneaking past Old Jacob. Psychology University! David describes the house he lives in, built by dickinson college soccer his grandfather, Elias Strorm. The house was built fifty years ago, the first house in psychology university the settlement; now it has many rooms, including storerooms and club soccer, barns that were added over the years. The frame of the house is made of wood, and the walls are filled in with remnants of the buildings left by the Old People. David is unsure of where the name Waknuk comes from, suggesting that it may have been part of the name the psychology university of pennsylvania, Old People used. The great room is the center of the home, where the hearth is located, and soccer tournament, the room is decorated with the religious text of Nicholson’s repentances.

The repentances serve as reminders to university of pennsylvania remain pure and be wary of mutants. In describing his grandfather, David states that Elias came from the university campus, East. His grandfather may have left his homeland because of their “ungodly ways”, but David suggests Elias may have been forced out. Of Pennsylvania! Elias, at ohio state library, age 45, arrived in university the area that is now Waknuk before it was developed. He found a young lovely wife, who died soon after their second son was born. Elias raised his son, Joseph Strorm, with a strong faith, both from the of illinois champaign football, Bible and from Nicholson’s Repentances.

David describes his father as a man of psychology university of pennsylvania, local consequence” who preaches in the local church. Depaul University In Atlanta! He married David’s mother because their views were in harmony with one another. An Offence to the religious decrees of the Repentances usually consists of phd in, some form of ohio state agriculture library, genetic mutation. Sometimes the mutation occurs in an animal, requiring that a ritual “Purification” slaughter of the animal takes place at dawn. The ritual consists of singing hymns and slitting the throat of the mutant animal. Other times, the phd in university, Offence is a vegetable that mutates or is malformed, and the entire field needs to homepage wisconsin be burned. If there is an question or disagreement about whether something qualifies as an Offence, the inspector is called in to judge. David notes that his father has a “keen eye” for Offences and that some community members feel that their community would have an overall improvement in phd in psychology their “deviation rate” if Joseph Strorm were not so vigilant about pointing out Offences.

Outside of theatre, David’s community there is a region called the Fringes. Phd In Psychology University Of Pennsylvania! The inhabitants there are considered inhuman because they are genetically mutated: they are labeled “Deviations. State University! As a tale of warning for misbehaving children, mothers used to invoke images of phd in psychology university of pennsylvania, two specific Fringe monsters: Hairy Jack lives in a cave and eats children, and Old Maggie is multi-limbed and multi-eyed. The actual Fringe people sometimes attack the area around Waknuk, stealing weapons and livestock. Beyond the Fringes are the Badlands, where no one has ever gone and survived. The Government is in Rigo, located in of illinois the East, where it is safer.

The Government does not provide much protection against attacks from the phd in psychology, Fringes. David describes his family as consisting of his mother, his two sisters, Mary and Sarah, and his Uncle Axel. There are also maids and theatre in atlanta, farm workers and their families who live in their complex of houses, and everyone shares meals together in their big room at the end of the day. Waknuk is a very busy farm, and David often avoids work by sneaking away when no one is looking, hiding away playing until dinner time. David continues his friendship with Sophie by visiting her two or three times a week after he finishes school in the mornings. Phd In Psychology Of Pennsylvania! She shows him her territory, and he brings her to his side of the bank to show off his community’s steam-engine.

Sophie and David discuss the Old People, wondering whether they are the magical beings that David imagines, who can fly, or if they are simply human, as Sophie believes. David introduces John Wender, Sophie’s father, with whom he has a serious “man to man” understanding. David reflects that years later he could appreciate how grave the situation was for newcastle student homepage, the Wenders, given that David knew their secret and phd in psychology of pennsylvania, was the son of one of the most powerful men. David narrates a time when he is dressing a splinter wound on his hand, and frustratedly exclaims that he wishes he had an extra hand of his own. University Laundry! His father becomes enraged that his son would express a desire to be anything outside of the image of God, as is stated in their religious texts, and has David go to his room to pray. That night David has a dream that Sophie is psychology university of pennsylvania, going to be sacrificed in the same manner in which the Strorms usually sacrifice mutant animals, in a Purification ceremony at dawn. Ohio Agriculture! Sophie runs barefoot around the circle of psychology university of pennsylvania, people and university student, begs for phd in university, help, but Joseph Strorm catches her and holds her down as his knife glints in the first light of the sun. David awakes crying. The book introduces the green, first-person narrator, David, who begins his story at phd in university of pennsylvania, the age of ten. He shows the reader the university florida, world through his eyes, those of a child but also those of phd in of pennsylvania, his current self, who is looking back and adding some commentary to the story.

The tale of champaign, how David meets Sophie is the beginning of David’s doubts about the belief system that he was taught in his youth. David specifically is puzzled as to why Sophie would not be considered human, when she is clearly just another child who does not seem any different from him. In addition, David feels Sophie's home is more friendly and less judgmental than his home. The horse motif appears in the Wenders’ home, as David notes that the Wenders do not have the Repentances on their wall, instead featuring pictures of horses. Horses as a symbolize freedom and psychology university of pennsylvania, escape throughout the book, a foreshadowing of what the Wenders will do when their secret is ohio agriculture library, discovered. David has internalized his own abnormality, which no one else can see, and phd in psychology of pennsylvania, already feels he is an outsider even though people in his family do not know about his special ability. Of Illinois Urbana Champaign Football! David feels at-risk for doing something wrong, such as revealing something about himself that is abnormal, like the dreams he has. In Chapter 3, David dresses a wound on his hand and exclaims he wishes he had a third hand so he could do it himself; as a result, his father punishes him.

Thus David lives in a world in which even small steps outside of the accepted boundaries of normality–such as a dream or a wish–can make one subject to punishment. Sophie’s mutation of having an extra toe on each foot demonstrates just how exacting and psychology of pennsylvania, punishing the world of Waknuk is, because a seemingly harmless abnormality marks someone as inhuman. David recognizes this as wrong, but he also confused because he has been brought up to believe the religious readings in the Repentances, which have a didactic and intimidating tone much like the Bible or the Ten Commandments. David had believed that the depaul university theatre, “deviant” humans were scary monsters, such as Hairy Jack and Old Maggie, the childhood allegories he describes when discussing the Fringes in Chapter 2. Phd In Psychology Of Pennsylvania! However, meeting Sophie causes him to question this logic. In describing his grandfather, David alludes to the fact that he would eventually doubt the honor-laden picture of university of central campus photos, him that the phd in university, rest of his family espouses. One again, David is emphasizing his breaking out of the constraints of his society. Elias Strorm is an allusion to of central florida campus photos Abraham of the phd in university, Bible, the patriarch of his people, directed by God to leave his own country for another land. Much like Abraham, Elias left his own country because of his strong religious beliefs. Newcastle University Wisconsin! Also like Abraham, we find out later that Elias disowns and would have sacrificed his own son, Gordon Strorm/the spider-man, because of his abnormality.

The community of psychology of pennsylvania, Waknuk and David’s family home serves as the setting for a large portion of the book. Specifically, David describes the solid architecture of his home, and how it was the first home that was built in their settlement. The Strorms’ home represents the solidity of the foundation of the community, based on religion and the power of the genetically pure. Another symbol that is introduced in ohio these chapters is the Steam Engine, a paragon of technology in a world that has only very basic farming, transportation, and communication methods. The Steam Engines represent the power of the Old People, and serve as a way of of pennsylvania, showing how far the Waknuk people have come; at the same time, the depaul university theatre performances in atlanta, Steam Engines are juxtaposed to the world that David dreams of, with horseless vehicles and flying machines. Initially, David believes this dream city may be a world of the Old People. However, this image is actually a foreshadowing to a place that David will learn more about later in the novel. The dream that David has of phd in psychology of pennsylvania, Sophie being sacrificed in a Purification ceremony serves a few literary purposes. The Purification process itself is an allusion to the sacrificing that took place in the Old Testament, as a way of pleasing God by sacrificing a lamb.

The dream is ohio state agriculture library, also a hyperbolic form of foreshadowing how David’s community will treat Sophie when she is discovered as a mutant. Phd In Psychology University Of Pennsylvania! In addition, it is an allegory for the morally exacting way David’s society feels about university green laundry rooms, people who fall outside of psychology university of pennsylvania, their definition of pure. David’s dreams of the beautiful city and Sophie are part of David’s characterization as a dreamer and a sensitive, insightful child. His dreamer qualities also paint him as somewhat lazy, preferring to avoid work, dream, and talk through think-shapes with his cousin Rosalind. conformity essay P entecostalism is arguably the most important mass religious movement of the twentieth century. Today, this movement is the second largest sub-group of psychology university of pennsylvania, global Christianity. It has over 30 million American adherents and a worldwide following of 430 million. 1 Pentecostalism’s inauspicious beginnings at the turn of the century make the movement’s growth all the more surprising. This essay will examine how historians have interpreted the origins of university agriculture library, American Pentecostalism and will suggest some areas for further study. Phd In Psychology University Of Pennsylvania. Before discussing the florida campus historiography, it will help to phd in psychology, survey the movement’s early history. Pentecostalism grew out of the Holiness revival during the second half of the theatre performances in atlanta nineteenth century.

This revival was an expression of psychology university of pennsylvania, both social and theological discontent among the nation’s lower and newcastle student homepage, middle-class groups. Holiness advocates disapproved of the impiety in psychology university of pennsylvania, mainline denominations and were alienated by the growing wealth and elaborateness of their churches. Not content to remain in mainline churches, they formed new religious communities committed to dickinson college soccer regional, the theological doctrine of perfectionism. 2 These former Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists believed they were experiencing a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit much like the early church experienced in the book of Acts. The holiness revival spawned zeal for Spirit Baptism (a divine empowerment of believers) and for other gifts of the New Testament church such as healing and prophecy. Holiness leaders such as Charles Cullis, John Alexander Dowie, and university of pennsylvania, Albert B. Simpson established healing missions across the performances U.S. They, like other holiness advocates, believed a new, miraculous era of the phd in university of pennsylvania spirit was occurring which would end in the second coming of Christ. Pentecostalism took Spirit Baptism and the restoration of newcastle university wisconsin, New Testament gifts one step further. In January, 1901, holiness minister Charles Fox Parham asked the psychology students at wisconsin his Topeka Bible school to phd in psychology of pennsylvania, study the scriptures and determine what evidence might be given of Spirit baptism. Using the pentecost account in Acts chapter two, they concluded that speaking in tongues was the confirmation of Holy Spirit baptism.

This first wave of Pentecostalism spread in the revival that followed, but remained regional, moving into Kansas, Missouri, Texas, and Arkansas. The 1906 revival at Azusa street, Los Angeles marks the second phase of the Pentecostals’ origins. Campus. William Seymour, who studied under Parham in Houston, Texas, carried the message of pentecost to Los Angeles where he began a revival in psychology, one of the poorer sections of the city. University Of Illinois Champaign Football. The Azusa street revival gathered the ethnic minority groups of Los Angeles, who discovered a sense of psychology university, dignity and community denied them in the larger urban culture. 3.

From Azusa street the revival spread throughout the U.S. Holiness leaders from the Church of God in Christ (Memphis, Tenessee), the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee), and the Pentecostal Holiness Church (Georgia and the Carolinas), were present at Azusa, and carried its message back to their churches. Diversity characterized their beliefs and theology; Pentecostals ranged from Wesleyan-holiness, to Reformed, and Unitarian. 4. The historiography of Pentecostalism is as multifaceted as the movement itself. The initial historical works on ohio green laundry Pentecostalism came from within the movement. Pentecostal historians wrote within a providential framework and focused on the role of God rather than human and natural causation.

These histories, as Grant Wacker indicates, were apologetic and largely ahistorical. Psychology University Of Pennsylvania. They depicted the Pentecostal revival as dropping from performances, heaven like a sacred meteor. This approach is evident in the titles of such early works as The Apostolic Faith Restored (1916), and in such account as Suddenly From Heaven: A History of the Assemblies of God (1961). 5. Before 1970 few historians outside of Pentecostalism were interested in phd in of pennsylvania, the movement. Academics’ unfamiliarity with the world of ecstatic religion might have been one reason for this oversight.

But just as likely, scholars thought the conservative religion of Pentecostalism, like Fundamentalism, was regressive, crude, and not worthy of their interests. In the late 1960s, the historian William G. McLoughlin argued that Pentecostalism did not constitute a dynamic new force in American Religion. For McLoughlin, Pentecostalism, like other reactionary religious movements in American history, would fade away with time. 6 David Edwin Harrell argues that before the 1970s, scholars limited their study to articulate religious bodies and to groups that were pertinent to scholars’ own academic interests. 7. Since the 1970s, historians both outside of and within the movement have critically engaged Pentecostalism. The rapid expansion of Pentecostalism in the U. S. and abroad drew scholars’ interest. At the same time scholarship on Pentecostalism grew along with the increase in university and seminary-trained Pentecostal historians. The establishment of the Society for Pentecostal Studies in the early 1970s evidenced this new historical enterprise. 8.

As historians have analyzed Pentecostalism, they have developed several explanations for its origins and growth. Some scholars focus on the historical-theological roots of the newcastle university student movement and emphasize the psychology university primacy of doctrine. They note the importance of Pentecostalism’s historical and theological predecessors and emphasize the religious appeal of the movement to laundry, it adherents. A few historians look at the movement’s interracial character to assess its origins and growth. In its initial stages, Pentecostalism was multi-ethnic and often challenged racial norms. Scholars looking at the interracial aspect view the movement as a radical protest to segregation and as a dynamic force of social change. Of Pennsylvania. With the ascendence of the university south green rooms new social history in the early 1970s, scholars began to analyze the demographics of Pentecostalism, assessing the movement’s adherents according to social status and class.

But before the rise of of pennsylvania, historical enquiries, sociological studies used class analysis and theories of state university, deprivation to psychology, understand the movement’s appeal. The theology of Pentecostalism was not of primary importance for these scholars. They reflected Richard Niebuhr’s class analysis of religion and posited that theology mirrored cultural and political conditions. 9 The prevailing view was that Pentecostalism flourished because it compensated for university urbana its adherent’s loss of social and political status. 10. David Edwin Harrell’s historical study of Pentecostalism followed this pattern. Harrell found that the racial and social views of Pentecostals were conditioned by class values rather than theological presuppositions. 11 Robert Mapes Anderson also rooted the movement in its class status. In Vision of the Disinherited , Anderson studied the social class origins of Pentecostalism and discovered that extreme social strain among the nation’s poor and university, dispossessed was the club soccer tournament source of Pentecostalism. Following Eric Hobsbawm and E. P. Phd In University Of Pennsylvania. Thompson, Anderson located social tension (such as class conflict and club soccer tournament, class stratification) in industrialization.

The shift from an phd in psychology university agrarian to an industrial society fed estrangement and those most at odds with this change suffered status anxiety and turned to Pentecostalism. 12 To explain how Pentecostals coped with status anxiety, Anderson looks at two major features of the movement: millennialism and dickinson club regional, speaking in phd in university of pennsylvania, tongues. Pentecostals’ belief in the immanent, apocalyptic return of Jesus, he contends, brought order to their chaotic lives and alleviated social strain. Similarly, speaking in tongues provided psychic escape through religious ecstacy. 13. Anderson concludes that Pentecostalism represented a dysfunctional and maladjusted reaction to social pressures. Because of the Pentecostals’ negative appraisal of society and their pessimistic outlook for tournament the future, they were an apolitical, conservative bulwark of the status quo. They channeled their social protest into the harmless backwaters of religious ideology. 14 For Anderson, the radical social impulse inherent in the vision of the disinherited was squandered away in escapism and conservative conformity. As Grant Wacker notes, Anderson’s study is the most thorough monograph on the origins of Pentecostalism. The breadth of Anderson’s book and the amount of data he looked at makes it a monument in psychology, the field of Pentecostal history.

At the university homepage wisconsin same time Wacker is critical of some of Anderson’s basic arguments. Phd In. Wacker contends that Anderson assumes Pentecostals’ faith is irrelevant if it does not foment social and ohio university south green rooms, economic protest. Wacker also criticizes him for judging religious rewards to be less satisfying than material ones. 15 For Wacker, and a number of other scholars, theology and doctrine, as much as social class, explains the roots of the movement. Wacker dwells on the positive functions of faith in the origins and spread of Pentecostalism. He notes that the movement provided individuals with certitude about the reality of the supernatural. Pentecostals coped with economic uncertainties, social ostracism, and racism by ordering their lives with a primitive faith. Seeing the world as morally degenerate, Pentecostals championed scriptural inerrancy, opposed scientific evolution and biblical criticism, and issued numerous cultural prohibitions.

Pentecostalism, Wacker contends, was appealing because its doctrines were situated in a traditional, mythic system that protected believers from the psychology university encroachments of modernity. 16. Scholars, including Grant Wacker, Edith Blumhofer, and urbana, D. William Faupel, have looked at the restorationist and millennial roots of the psychology of pennsylvania movement. Wacker describes the newcastle university restorationist impulse as a yearning to phd in psychology university of pennsylvania, return to a time before time, to a space outside of space, to a mythical realm that Alexander Campbell [founder of the Disciples of Christ] called the ‘ancient order of things. This was not a nostalgic longing for frontier revivalism, but a desire to return to first century Christianity.

17 Pentecostals linked the performances sprititual gifts they received, such as speaking in tongues, prophesying, and healing with those described in the book of Acts. Phd In Psychology. Edith Blumhofer sees restorationism and university of central campus photos, millennialism shaping the foundation of the Assemblies of God. Pentecostals, according to Blumhofer, asserted that the new era of the spirit, before Christ’s second coming, would bring about a return to primitive Christianity. The early Assemblies of God were caught up in this historylessness and sought a return to primitive ecclesiastical foundations. Church leaders advocated a strict congregational government and opposed creeds and the formulation of psychology university of pennsylvania, doctrine. 18.

This millennial vision, according to newcastle university student homepage wisconsin, James R. Goff Jr., led to increased missionary activity among Pentecostalis. Charles Fox Parham, for example, concluded that speaking in foreign tongues would allow Pentecostals to missionize the world before Christ’s second coming. 19 Goff indicates that this missionary impulse explains both the origins and rapid growth of Pentecostalism. Preaching Christ’s immanent return, Pentecostals won converts among their uneasy listeners. Pentecostalism spread, says Goff, because of its adherents’ millennial urgency. Scholars also have accounted for the origins of university of pennsylvania, Pentecostalism by locating the movement within late nineteenth century religious currents. Donald Dayton suggests that the of illinois champaign football roots of Pentecostalism lie in the emergence of four theological doctrines during the second half of the nineteenth century: salvation, healing, baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the second coming of Christ. 20 Dayton traces how these doctrines developed within the Holiness movement and were then taken up by Pentecostals.

He stresses both the Wesleyan-holiness origins, which accented the perfectionist side of Spirit baptism, and the Keswick-Reformed origins, which emphasized Spirit baptism as a spiritual empowerment in the believer. 21 Like Dayton, Raymond J. Phd In University Of Pennsylvania. Cunningham has studied the roots of Pentecostalism in the healing and faith cure movements of the dickinson college club regional late nineteenth century. By accentuating divine gifts, these groups often fed directly into Pentecostalism. 22. Vinson Synan’s The Holiness-Pentecostal Tradition is a general survey which highlights the nineteenth century roots of the movement. Synan situates the origins of Pentecostalism in the Wesleyan-holiness doctrine of sanctification or the phd in second blessing.

For Methodists and pre-Pentecostals, sanctification perfected the believer after conversion. The Pentecostals, states Synan, made the second blessing synonymous with the pentecost account in Acts. State. Thus, speaking in tongues became a sign of sanctification. 23. Scholars from the Reformed wing of Pentecostalism have argued that the Keswick-Reformed roots better address the movement’s origins. These scholars contend that Pentecostals were not as influenced by psychology university of pennsylvania Wesleyan-perfectionism as they were by Keswick theology. 24 Keswickians stressed the finished work of conversion and did not believe in a second work of grace as did Wesleyans. Edith Blumhofer’s 1977 Harvard dissertation challenged Synan’s thesis by accenting the newcastle university student theological contributions of Reformed and Fundamentalist leaders. 25 Blumhofer argues that these leaders provided the psychology Pentecostals with an understanding of Spirit Baptism which little resembled the Wesleyan view.

For them, Spirit baptism empowered the believer to serve God, but was not a morally perfecting experience. Assemblies of God historian William Menzies also challenges Synan’s view. Menzies argues that the second-blessing advocates were less influential than Reformed, finished work Pentecostals. For most early Pentecostals, Menzies contends, speaking in tongues was associated with spiritual power and with an university of central campus anointing to serve rather than spiritual perfection. Phd In University. 26. These internecine historiographic battles get at an important point: from the beginning Pentecostals experienced internal and external antagonisms that helped shape and transform them. 27 Both Donald Dayton and Grant Wacker have written about these struggles and how they affected Pentecostalism. Wacker, writing on the anti-Pentecostal forces within radical evangelicalism, shows how doctrinal differences precipitated conflict.

Contrary to Anderson, Wacker contends that class variation did not cause conflict as much as doctrinal distinctions did. The reason non-Pentecostal Holiness leaders so vehemently opposed Pentecostals, says Wacker, was because Pentecostals demanded that all sanctified Christians must speak in tongues. Club Soccer Regional Tournament. 28 Doctrine also gave rise to schisms within the movement. The Wesleyan factions (the Apostolic Faith Union and the Church of God) fought with the Reformed wing (Assemblies of God), and Reformed, Trinitarian Pentecostals waged war on Unitarian Pentecostals. Scholars have also focused on how Pentecostals reacted to the culture around them. Most agree that while Pentecostalism was largely apolitical, early Pentecostals’ opposition to psychology university, America’s political and social culture was politically charged. 29 Pentecostals were centered on soul-winning and perceived politics and national events to be dangerous diversions. But early Pentecostals were also both prohibitionists and theatre performances in atlanta, pacifists (many chose C. O. status during WW I). Psychology University. According to university champaign, Mickey Crews, the predominately rural Church of God (Cleveland) often stood in opposition to the prevailing contemporary attitudes toward wealth, recreation, and dress.

Likewise, during the psychology university of pennsylvania Jim Crow era the Church of God was one of the newcastle university homepage more racially integrated churches in the South. Psychology University Of Pennsylvania. The early years of this church were marked by racial cooperation. Like Populism, Crews indicates, the Church of God offered women as well as blacks opportunities to university of illinois urbana, serve in positions of leadership which they would not have had in traditional organizations. 30. A few historians of Pentecostalism trace the movement’s success to its racial progressiveness. Church of God in Christ historian Leonard Lovett contends that historians have not viewed black Pentecostalism in its proper historical context and have failed to appreciate the movement’s black roots. Lovett stresses the psychology university of pennsylvania prominence of the black leader William Seymour and university agriculture library, the importance of Azusa’s interracial character. He also gives attention to the Africanisms of the early revival. 31 Similarly, Iain MacRobert studies the black roots of Pentecostalism, emphasizing both the role of Seymour in the revival and phd in psychology, the place of African concepts of community, spiritual power, spirit possession . Performances. . Phd In Of Pennsylvania. . equality, black personhood, dignity, and the desire for university of illinois urbana champaign football revolution. MacRobert attributes schisms in the movement to white racism.

He argues that the white leadership in psychology university, the Apostolic Faith Union and ohio south laundry rooms, the Assemblies of God turned their backs on psychology of pennsylvania their interracial heritage, segregating their churches according to race. 32 In a more recent work, Harvey Cox suggests that the inter-ethnic character of Azusa street was the movement’s sine qua non . 33. Edith Blumhofer and Joe Creech have countered that a myth of Azusa street prevails in these accounts. Early Pentecostalism, they contend, was not a homogenous movement but developed from a variety of sources. Ohio South Laundry. Blumhofer argues that Azusa street could not hold the allegiance of its own enthusiasts, who broke away to form numerous rival congregations nearby, none of which was known to replicate the racial mix of the phd in psychology of pennsylvania mother congregation.

34 Creech maintains that Azusa has remained important in the historiography because it provides historians with a racially progressive narrative of Pentecostalism and because it serves to unify and depaul university, homogenize a heterogeneous movement. 35. Pentecostalism’s diverse heritage has drawn the attention of historians who have sought an explanation for the movement’s origins. Psychology University Of Pennsylvania. The rise of Pentecostalism at the turn of the state agriculture century tells us how a number of America’s poor coped with the economic, social, and phd in psychology of pennsylvania, religious challenges of modernity. Like Fundamentalists, Pentecostals built their faith on doctrinal certitude and religious zeal. State University Agriculture. Pentecostals faced their disordered world by returning to primitive Christianity and a by re-instituting New Testament spiritual gifts.

Convinced of Christ’s immanent return, their social outlook was often otherworldly. Although Pentecostals did not engage politics directly, their actions reveal political and of pennsylvania, social protests nonetheless. Early Pentecostals were often pacifists as well as prohibitionists. Newcastle Homepage Wisconsin. Concurrently, in religious practice they stood in opposition to both racism and the denigration of women. 36. It is becoming more difficult for historians to psychology, dismiss Pentecostals as socially irrelevant. Pentecostal’s views on race, gender, and theology were complicated and deserve more scholarly attention. Since the 1970s the movement has been studied in greater detail. However, the fields of performances in atlanta, American history and American religious history would benefit from a broadening of the current scholarship.

There are various areas of Pentecostal history that still have not been studied. Certain institutional and biographical histories need to be written. A scholarly history of the predominately black, six million member Church of God in Christ has yet to psychology university of pennsylvania, be undertaken. Similarly, few scholars have studied the histories of the numerous Unitarian Pentecostals. There is university theatre performances in atlanta still a paucity of biographies on some key leaders, including William J Seymour, A. J. Tomilson (Church of God Cleveland), Charles H. Mason (Church of psychology university of pennsylvania, God in Christ), and Gaston Barnabas Cashwell (Fire Baptized Holiness Church, Pentecostal Holiness Church, Church of God, Pentecostal Free-Will Baptist Church). Historians of Pentecostalism have not taken advantage of the full range of extent sources. Many have relied on institutional records and sources from the urbana football movement’s leadership. The documents of Pentecostalism’s rank and phd in psychology university of pennsylvania, file remain unstudied; personal records, diaries, and correspondences are virtually untouched.

37 Pentecostalism still needs to have histories written from the bottom up. Such works might reveal how Pentecostalism differed among the lower levels of the movement. Did doctrinal controversies plague the laity as it did church leaders? Did the agriculture library laity differ significantly from the clergy in social or economic status? 38 How did the laity accept gender and racial norms within Pentecostalism?

The role of women in the early movement in particular has received slight attention. 39 Historians know that women often acted as worship leaders and evangelists in early Pentecostalism, but as of phd in psychology university, yet no one has critically assessed the role of women in the movement as a whole. Did women enjoy more opportunities within Pentecostal sects than they did in mainline churches? If so, were women drawn to university champaign, the movement who might otherwise have not joined Pentecostal churches? Did the roles of women in Fundamentalist churches differ from those of women in Pentecostal ones? The confluence of race and gender is also an area that merits careful consideration.

A church such as the Church of phd in psychology of pennsylvania, God in Christ did not ordain women, but still had the most powerful Women’s Department of any black denomination in the U. S. Were women’s roles in this church like those Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham describes in the National Baptist Convention? One Historian of Pentecostalism suggests that they were similar. The Church of God in Christ, according to Cheryl Sanders, rejected the norms of white patriarchy and affirmed black female personhood by esteeming women leaders and educators. Student Wisconsin. Sanders also suggests that it was not gender, but spiritual gifts that qualified individuals for phd in leadership in the Holiness and Pentecostal churches. 40 Whether this was true in most Holiness and Pentecostal churches is unlikely, but these sects often broke with racial and gender norms. Another area of promise for further research is the study of Pentecostalism and Populism as parallel social protests. Secular and religious historians have raised similar questions about both movements. Both arose during a period of economic and social instability, in which America underwent drastic changes. In this regard, both have been analyzed as protest movements of the dispossessed and marginalized.

Scholars also have been concerned with whether the Holiness-Pentecostal and newcastle, the Populist movements moved beyond racial and gender norms. 41 Scholars generally agree that both groups’ demographics are remarkably similar. Nonetheless, no one has published a work dealing with these groups as parallel movements. Such studies might reveal why some were attracted to Holiness-Pentecostalism and others to the Farmers’ Alliance and Populism. Was affiliation arbitrary? Or, was it dictated by such factors as region, class, and religious world view? Could the success of Pentecostalism in phd in psychology, the South and Midwest after 1900 and 1906 be accounted for by the failures of Populism in these same regions?

Similarly, a major study of their congruities might shed light on how these movements differed as social protests. In the depaul theatre performances in atlanta coming years scholars may be asking these and other questions in their search for the origins of Pentecostalism. Before the 1970s the history of Pentecostalism was not a dot on of pennsylvania the horizon of American historiography. The state of the field has grown significantly in the last thirty years and will continue to advance in the twenty first century. As of yet, however, the amount of club soccer tournament, scholarship is psychology university of pennsylvania not equal to university student homepage wisconsin, the movement’s numeric strength. Pentecostalism’s mass appeal should challenge historians to look deeper into psychology university, the movement’s distant past.
